April 12, 2019—Solid Power, a startup promising a breakthrough solid state battery, announced that it is teaming up with Ford to develop batteries for their “next-generation electric vehicles.”

The company claims to have achieved a breakthrough by incorporating a high-capacity lithium metal anode in lithium batteries, reported Electrek.

Solid Power has attracted investments from companies like A123 Systems and more recently, BMW, and adding Ford to the growing list of investors.

Some of the potential benefits of the battery include 50 percent higher energy, improved safety due to the elimination of the flammable liquid electrolyte as used in lithium-ion, and high manufacturability.
